In Search of the Perfect Krémes in Budapest

 Maródi Cukrászda
Near Margit Bridge on Pest Side

A friend sent us a Wall Street Journal article about Hungarian Krémes, something Michael has always enjoyed. Unfortunately, it definitely is a different dessert depending on where you get it. At more than one Cukrászda (sweet shop/coffee shop) we found it to have a rubbery crust, stale and tasteless with thick pudding filling.

Before today, Szamos was our favorite. But then we read The Crème of the Krémes in Budapest.
When we realized that the number one choice of the Hungarian-American author was a ten-minute walk from our flat, we decided to have Krémes for lunch!

We started by ordering only one piece. After all, it was large and we didn't know if we'd like it. But we ended up devouring two...they were light with a custard filling under a light layer of whipped cream, and the pastry top and bottom were flaky and fresh. mmmm

In addition, the wait staff were friendly and helpful, my latte machiatto was well-prepared, and the surroundings were beautiful--a great view out the windows upstairs and modern comfortable furnishings.

There's even a small room with couches upstairs for a more private feel.  This is definitely worth a stop and close to the 4/6 tram stop on the Pest side of the Margit Hid.

The Krémes was only 320 ft. ($1.50), the small latte was 550ft. and tea was 350 ft.  You can even catch McDonald's wifi.
