I think the public transportation in Budapest is great. Although only a few of the buses, trams and metros have been modernized, they are still very reliable and the network is extensive. You can buy tickets singly or in books of 10 or you can buy a daily, weekly or monthly pass. The latter is the cheapest way to travel if you are in Budapest at least 3 weeks. Tickets can be purchased at most metro stations as well as other locations throughout the city and many of these places are open everyday of the week.
Periodically, BKV employees will check to make sure you have a valid pass or ticket. If you are traveling without a ticket, you will be fined. If you pay the fine immediately, it costs less.
